How to Lift a Car on Jack Stands Without Guessing the Hard Points

Crawling under a car that is held only by a hydraulic jack is how home repairs become emergencies. Jack stands are the support. The floor jack is the elevator. Follow this sequence every time, even for a quick oil filter reach.

Step 1: Park on flat, solid ground
Concrete is ideal. Avoid gravel, dirt, and slopes. Put the transmission in park or in gear for a manual, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels that will stay on the ground.

Step 2: Find the rated jack points
Read the owner manual for pinch welds, frame pads, or subframe points. Look for factory arrows or reinforced pads. Do not lift on control arms, the oil pan, plastic covers, or thin floor sheet metal unless the manual says so.

Step 3: Pre-position the stands
Set jack stands at the matching support points near where you will lift, at a height that will clear the work with a little margin. Having them ready means you are not hunting for stands while the car is in the air on the jack alone.

Step 4: Lift slowly with a quality floor jack
Center the jack pad on the lift point. Raise until the tire you need off the ground clears by enough to slide the stand under. If you are lifting the whole front or rear, raise in stages and set stands progressively so the car never rests on the jack.

Step 5: Seat the stands and lower onto them
Slide each stand fully under its point, ensure the locking pin or ratchet is engaged, and slowly lower the jack until the vehicle weight sits on the stands. Give the car a firm shove at the bumper. If it rocks or a stand tips, raise again and reset. Nothing should feel spongy.

Step 6: Keep the jack as a backup if you want, never as the only support
Some techs leave the jack lightly touching as a third point after stands are loaded. That is optional. What is not optional is never working under a car held only by hydraulic pressure.

Step 7: Reverse carefully when you are done
Raise slightly with the jack, remove stands, clear tools, and lower slowly. Remove chocks last. Listen for anything you left hanging.

Weight ratings matter
Use stands rated above the portion of vehicle weight you are supporting, in matched pairs. Cheap, bent, or unpaired stands belong in the scrap pile. A clean garage floor and the right points turn undercar work into a controlled job instead of a gamble.
